Dr. Williams arrives at DSU after serving as the interim associate vice president for Academic Affairs for the University of North Carolina General Administration (UNC-GA).
Prior to that, he served as the associate vice chancellor for Academic Affairs and Diversity at Appalachian State University (ASU) from 2002 to 2007. During that period, from 2004 to 2007 Dr. Williams served as ASU’s associate vice chancellor for Enrollment Management. He was also the interim director of Admissions at North Carolina A&T State University from 2000 to 2002.
During his tenures at UNC-GA and ASU, Dr. Williams served on numerous executive boards, councils, committees and task forces. In his capacity as vice chancellor of Academic Affairs and Diversity at ASU, Dr. Williams successfully raised $565,000 for diversity scholarships.
Dr. Williams has also been a senior associate consultant from 2002 to present with Noel Levitz, a nationally known consulting firm on higher education enrollment and retention. Delaware State University is among the 13 schools that he has worked with as a consultant.
Dr. Sessoms said the DSU search process has resulted in an outstanding appointment. “Dr. Harry Williams brings a wealth of experience in areas that are crucial to the future of the University,” Dr. Sessoms said. “He already has some familiarity with the University as he has been providing guidance and advice to DSU for a number of years.”
A native of Greenville, North Carolina, Dr. Williams has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Communication Broadcasting and a Master of Arts Degree in Educational Media, both from ASU, where he also earned an Education Specialist degree. He has a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis from East Tennessee State University.
Dr. Williams said he is excited about his new post with DSU. “This is an incredible opportunity and honor to be asked to serve as the Provost for one of the top HBCUs in America,” Dr. Williams said.
Dr. Williams succeeds Dr. Kenneth Bell, who has served as the interim provost and vice president of Academic Affairs since April 2006.
“With this appointment, Dr. Williams is a superb addition to what is already an excellent executive management team,” Dr. Sessoms said. “He is a worthy successor to Dr. Kenneth Bell.”
The DSU Search Committee for the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs consisted of two executive administrators, one dean, three department chairs, one faculty member and one Board of Trustees representative. The DSU provost search process was facilitated by the Miramar Beach, Fla.-based firm of Greenwood/Asher and Associates, Inc.
On the search committee were executive administrators Amir Mohammadi (committee chair), vice president of Finance and Administration, and Dr. Kenneth Bell, acting provost and vice president of Academic Affairs; Dr. Robert Minter, dean of the College of Business; department chairs Dr. Richard Barczewski, Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr. Yvonne Stringfield, Department of Nursing, and Dr. Noureddine Melikechi, Department of Physics and Pre-Engineering; as well as faculty member Dr. Dawn Lott, associate professor of mathematics, and Dr. Claibourne Smith, chair of the DSU Board of Trustees. The committee's recommendation of Dr. Williams was unanimous.
Dr. Williams is married to Dr. Robin S. Williams, (tenured) associate professor of technology at ASU. They have two children, Austin, age 12 and Gavin, age 7.
He assume his new DSU post July 21.
